Fishing in Portumna on the banks of the river Shannon

For angling enthusiasts, Portumna offers good fishing waters which have a good track record. There are several prime angling hotspots, a number of which are official match stretches located on the river Shannon itself and the Northern Shores of Lough Derg. On the river there are two stretches up and downstream of Portumna, known locally as the lower 'town stretches' or Rogers Island and upper ESB stretch called Fairyhill. The most commonly caught species include Pike Perch Roach and Bream.

Portumna and district is practically a new area of the lower Shannon to the coarse Angler, offering over twenty miles of unfished water from Shannon Grove on the Galway side and the Blackwater above Victoria Lock on the Tipperary side, down to Lough Derg. It's huge shoals of large Bream, specimen Rudd, and Pike are awaiting the angler visiting the Emerald Isle.

• Lough Derg - The Shannon's largest lake contains large stocks of good Bream, Rudd, Rudd/Bream hybrid and Pike.
• Friars Loughs - relatively sheltered, producing good Bream up to 45Kg with a large stock of Rudd and Perch present.
• Ballymacegan - 'Milnes Stretch' takes its name from a local pub and even without pre-baiting, have excellent Bream, Rudd and Perch.
• Tiernascragh - the 'Shebeen Stretch' provides easy access to angling waters, produces shoals of large Bream. The 'Stretch' will accommodate 80 anglers and provide excellent fishing for all.
• Portumna Bridge -
• the 'Island' has currently 8 swims producing Rudd, Perch and good Bream catches.
• The maze of waters at Meelick produce a variety of fishing. The deep back waters hold a big stock of Bream and Rudd. Below the weir the river is shallow and fast, producing Rudd over 2lbs, also Rudd/Bream hybrid.
